Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
