Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the ability to question particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
